2009 – Presiding Officers Burns Supper
Venue – Scottish Parliament
Jean Allan and her guest Sandra Dunbar, both members of Greenock Burns Club and Robert Burns World Federation were invited to the Presiding Officers (Alex Ferguson MSP) Burns Supper in the Scottish Parliament which was to mark the start of a year of activities and events in Scotland celebrating the 250th Anniversary of Robert Burns birth and commemorating the Scottish Parliaments 10th Anniversary.
There was a delightful programme of entertainment during the evening showcasing some of Scotland’s most talented and aspiring young musicians and dramatists combined with good company and of course the excellent traditional fayre served over dinner.
Ewan McCall, Young Burnsian for 2008 performed a very impressive “Address to the Haggis”.
Len Murray, retired Lawyer also gave an excellent speech and toast to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns. Len Murray is a Past Honorary President of Greenock Burns Club and this was mentioned at his introduction.
David Mcletchie MSP started with a very amusing “Toast to the Lassies” and finished by admitting admiration for the fair sex.
Cathie Peattie MSP replied on behalf of The Lasses. She has a beautiful voice and interspersed her reply by singing a number of Robert Burns’s songs.
It certainly was a wonderful evening and we were both delighted and privileged to have been present at such a memorable occasion.
Jean M Allan
