2014 – National “Address To A Haggis” Competition
On Sunday, 18 May, 2014, whilst the ladies met in Dumfries for the “Lasses Lunch”, the men were invited to The Globe Inn to compete in the first National “Address To A Haggis” Competition.
A goodly number entered for the competition, which included members from the Mother Club.
As the weather was dry, it was decided to hold it in the Courtyard.
Problem – No haggis! No Knife! Come to think of it – no table either!
The competitors improvised by using a Tam O’Shanter bunnet as a haggis.
It was closely contested in a very light-hearted manner and was judge by Past Presidents of the RBWF.
All the competitors received a packet of Hamlyns Porridge oats for their efforts.
The eventual winner was Jimmy Law, President of the Poosie Nancy’s Burns Club, Skelmorlie, who received a Hamlyns Haggis and a certificate declaring him this years “Chieftain”.
After the competition, all competitors and visitors were invited to a tour of the Globe Inn, including the Burns Room.
In order to be allowed to sit in Burns’s chair, tradition had it that the person has to recite some poetry of Burns.
A great day was had by all!
Goodness knows how the Lasses Lunch got on!
