2020 – Inverclyde Secondary Schools Burns Supper
Greenock Burns Club’s 33rd Annual Inverclyde Secondary Schools’ Burns Supper took place on Thursday the 20th of February at Notre Dame High School and was a splendid affair.
As usual, all of the event’s speeches, recitations and musical performances were delivered expertly by the pupils of the local secondary schools with the only adults involved being Mrs Couttie (Head Teacher of Notre Dame), who welcomed the guests and Alan Beck (President of Greenock Burns Club) who chaired the evening.
The principal speaker of the evening, who delivered the toast to The Immortal Memory of Robert Burns, was Ciaran Hogg, Head Boy of Clydeview Academy.
After his excellent and well-researched toast, Ciaran was made a junior member of the club.
The toast to The Lassies was delivered by Ryan Smith, Head Boy of Notre Dame who gave the toast with just the right balance of cheek and reverence … and a good dash of humour too.
This toast was replied to by Notre Dame Head Girl, Emily Stevenson who took Ryan to task on his claims that men are the pre-eminent sex with some very cutting (and very funny remarks).
After an excellent Vote of Thanks by Emma Young of Port Glasgow High, the evening was rounded off in traditional style with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Guest of Honour, Provost Martin Brennan was very complimentary about the talents of the 30 or so pupils who took part in the evening’s entertainment and this was echoed by the loud and long applause of the very appreciative audience. All in all an excellent evening.
A big thank you goes to A.P.Jess butchers, who have kindly donated the haggis for everyone present for many years.
