2014 – Annual Summer Outing to Inveraray
A small group of members enjoyed the Annual Outing to Inveraray in early June. It was one of the best days of the summer and the sun shone on us all day.
We had morning coffee and high tea at the George Hotel both of which were excellent and enjoyed by all.
For most of the day the members were free to wander round the shops, visit the Castle or the Jail.
We did have some ‘Burns’ in the form of a quiz, which was won by our New President Billy McCready and Brian Jackson.
Robert Burns did visit Inveraray on his way through the Highlands but was not amused with the Duke of Argyll, who would not put him up at the castle. To add to his unhappiness, he was not waited on appropriately at the Inn due to friends of his Grace also residing there. It is said that he scribed the following verse on a window pane at the Inn.
Whoe’er he be that sojourns here,
I pity much his case,
Unless he come to wait upon
The Lord their God, His Grace.
There’s naething here but Highland pride,
And Highland scab and hunger:
If Providence has sent me here,
‘Twas surely in an anger.
