2014 – Annual Celebration

On Saturday 25th January, 2014, members and guest of The Greenock Burns Club held their 212th Annual Celebration within the Tontine Hotel, Greenock.

The top table guests were piped into the room by Bill McCready.

The proceedings were chaired by Maureen Armstrong, President, who gave everyone a warm welcome. Rev. Eileen Manson then said grace.

Bill McCready then piped in the haggis after which Gordon McKenzie gave a rousing “Address to A Haggis.”

After dinner Maureen Armstrong introduced her sister, Caroline Lafferty,entertained all present with the Eddie Reader ballad “Wild Mountain Side”. This was followed later in the evening with “Ae Fond Kiss”, “rowan Tree” and “Coming thro the Rye”.

President Maureen Armstrong then introduced the principal speaker for the evening – Jane Brown, President of the Robert Burns World Federation, who proposed an wonderful and inspiring toast to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns. Jane took the role of Jean Armour speaking in rhyme of her life with Rabbie. At the conclusion she rightfully received a standing ovation.

The Toast to the Mother Club was proposed by Ruairidh Forde, who was witty and entertaining, drawing on his youthful knowledge of the latest social media technology

and how Rabbie would have fitted into today’s world.

A suitable reply was made by Bill McCready, Senior vice-President.

Gordon McKenzie then gave a sensitive rendition of “Lament for James, Earl of Glencairn”.

and how Rabbie would have fitted into today’s world.

A suitable reply was made by Bill McCready, Senior vice-President.

 

It is the tradition at Greenock Burns Club for the person proposing the Toast to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns at the Annual Celebration to be installed as this years Honorary President. This duty was performed by Maureen Armstrong.

Jane Brown expressed her delight at receiving such an honour from the Mother Club and stated it was one of the highlights of her life, second only to her being installed as President of the Robert Burns World Federation.

A comprehensive Vote of Thanks was proposed by Christine MacLeod, Junior Vice-President which included received the approbation of all present.

The evening was concluded in the traditional manner with all of the company singing Auld Land Syne.
