2014 – Inverclyde Secondary Schools Annual Burns Supper

2014 Schools BS 02

On the evening of Thursday 24 February, 2014, family and friends gathered at Port Glasgow High School for the 26th Inverclyde Secondary Schools Burns Supper at Port Glasgow High School.

It was a great venue, in the new school, which is part of the shared campus, incorporating Port Glasgow High School, St. Stephens High School and Craigmarloch School.

The evening got off to a great start with Murray McKechnie piping in the top table guests.

Mr Alan Dick, Head Teacher of Port Glasgow High School, warmly welcomed all of the guests and stated he was proud to be able to host this years Burns Supper and of the opportunity of showcasing the new shared campus.

20140220 Schools Burns Supper 019aMrs Maureen Armstrong, President, then took control of the reigns and welcomed everyone on behalf of the Greenock Burns Club and hoped they would enjoy the evening.

The haggis was proudly carried by Julia Ballingall to the skirl of the pipes. Gina Meahan then gave an excellent Address to a Haggis. This was followed by Jenny Docherty who said grace.

After the meal, which was enjoyed by everyone, Maureen Armstrong introduced Ryan McKeown, head boy at Port Glasgow High School, who proposed the toast to the bard. It was obvious that Ryan had carried out considerable research in compiling his toast, which was well received.

The next speaker was Scott Nicol, who proposed a humorous “Toast to the Lasses”. Lucy Ballingall made an equally humorous “Reply”.

The evening was interspersed with poetry recitations, songs and the playing of an array of instruments, which showcased the talent of the young people of Inverclyde.

The evening drew towards a close when Amy Bain gave a comprehensive “Vote of Thanks” to everyone involved in organising the Burns Supper, which has become on e of the highlights of the Burns Calendar in Inverclyde.

The evening concluded in the traditional manner with everyone singing “Auld Lang Syne”.

A special thanks must go to McKechnie Jess butchers for their continued support by donating the haggis for the Burns Supper yet again.

A further thanks to the Greenock Burns Club for the financial support of the Burns Supper.
