Greenock Custom House

An architectural jewel in the crown of Greenock is its beautiful Custom House. This classically-proportioned building was home to the vigilant excise men who policed Scotland’s burgeoning trade with the world. It witnessed the rise and fall of the tobacco, sugar and shipbuilding industries in the town. Designed by William Burns and opened in 1814, the building was lovingly restored by Riverside Inverclyde in 2017. Greenock Burns Club were delighted to be offered accommodation at the original, main entrance to the building, to display and store our archive.

Online Collection

In 2020, the Club secured an award from the National Lottery Heritage Fund under their Digital Confidence programme. As part of our ambitious plans to embrace digital technology, the award will allow us to showcase some of our archive online. A project, involving literature students from the University of Glasgow will assess and evaluate our collection and digitise items of interest which will be available to view on our website in the coming months.
